1.3 Supportive Yoga

This activity will take place in the form of a discussion, followed by a yoga session. This activity’s objective is:

For children to identify, discuss, and reflect on support systems present in their lives.

If you saved the Trees of Trust, hand them out to the kids who participated. This acts as a visual prompt for the kids during the discussion. Place the Trees of Trust in front of the yoga mat. 

Start with a leaded discussion surrounding support. Have fun with the discussion! Be creative. See where it goes! Some prompted questions are:yoga

  • Who supports you?
  • How do they support you?
  • Who do you support?
  • How do you support them?
  • How could you be a better friend?
  • How could you be a better daughter/son/brother/sister?

Next, encourage the children to visualize these people they support and reflect for a few deep breaths.

Move into the yoga session and continue to reflect.

1.2 Tree of Trust

Throughout this activity each child will work to create a tree of trust. This activity’s objective is:

For children to use the visual and spatial intelligence to identify supportive relationships, lessons learned, and goals.

  • First have the children explore people whom they trust and depict these people in the roots.
  • Next explore the lessons they have learned, which will be depicted in the trunk.
  • Then explore the people they(the children) support, depicted in the leaves.
  • Finally the goals they have will be depicted in the grass.

1.1 Building Blocks to a Better Future

Tlegohis activity is the suggested introduction activity for the Developmental Assets. So to start, instead of introducing the Assets as the “Developmental Assets”, which will go in one ear and out the other for six year olds, we will start by introducing them as “Building Blocks.” This activity’s objective is:

For children to comprehend the basic premise behind the Developmental Assets, presented in the form of building strong, solid towers. For children to recognize the support systems in their lives who help form their strong base.

We will introduce the Assets by using a metaphor of building a tower. If you don’t have a strong base the tower won’t be able to stand strong or stand for a long period of time. But, if you have a strong, solid base the tower will be able to stand tall and proud. It is the same with the Developmental Assets, the more Assets one has the stronger they will be and the more likely they will be to stand firm and proud.

In this activity, we will build a tower that has a weak base and compare it to another tower we will build with a strong base.  Discuss the difference. Then debrief.

Who or what helps us have a strong base? Who or what acts as our corner stones? Who can we depend on? Why can we depend on them? How can we be a support for our friends and family?

With the kick start of the Developmental Assets Inventory starting on Monday, I wanted to remind you of a few tips in giving a survey. For us to have the most valid data please remember to:

  • Explain the inventory to the kids
  • Ask the questions exactly as they are stated
  • If the child holds confusion, give two prompts
  • Inventories are due NO LATER than November 21, 2014!

The first post on our brand new blog…

I’ll take this moment to challenge all coordinators to participate in this Asset Building Challenge, which consist of a list of simple things we can do in our everyday work. For example, to celebrate the characteristics that each child brings to the group and to find ways each child can shine.

The goal of this challenge is to make us aware of our actions. Try to challenge yourself and your coworkers to complete a tip a day until all of the tips are completed.
